Lumina Sophie, called "Surprise", nickname of Marie-Philomène Roptus (November 5, 1848 â September 15, 1879) was a heroine of the 1870 revolt on the island of Martinique, a French overseas department. She organized a group of insurgent women, the pétroleuses, who burned plantations and called on citizens to face local authority to free an unjustly convicted black sailor.
